Music Response: An Overview of the Answer Record - Rate Your Music

Music Response: An Overview of the Answer Record - Rate Your Music: The answer record is an interesting subset of novelty music. It is a song that grabs at the coattails of a recent hit, typically offering a whimsical counterpoint to its lyrical theme. More often than not, the reply is told from the viewpoint of the opposite sex. There are examples throughout pop music history, but the phenomenon was most common in the singles-oriented era of the 1950s and '60s. There are various opinions as to what constitutes an answer record. For the purposes of this list I've decided to focus on songs that explicitly respond to the lyrics of a previous record. Not included are sequel records to a hit by the same artist (such as Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue Got Married"), lyrical jabs by feuding artists in otherwise unrelated songs (Lynyrd Skynrd and Neil Young, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee, etc.) and songs that are more of a parody than an answer record (pretty much all of Ben Colder's output).
